Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'm in the process of making a ginger bug, but I used a bit of honey and a bit of sugar. It's been 7 days and I do not have any bubbles nor could I detect yeasty smell. Please, help.

Hi Miriam!

1) I suppose you could ferment the ginger with a pickle pipe if you prefer.
2) Yes, you can use ginger bug + soda stream. But, remember, that you should only carbonate clean water (and flavorings) with the machine, so stir in the ginger bug after.

I love ginger and this seems like a really cool way to use it. I have fermented vegetables in canning jars with glass weighst and pickle pipes on them. They only need a week so I leave them on the counter. Could I do the same with the ginger bug - ie. the glass weight and pickle pipes or do you really recommend that the jar be tightly sealed.
My second question is to use - I have a soda stream and I have been adding a little concentrated fruit juice to it for a refreshing drink. Could I use the ginger bug in the same way i.e. not ferment the soda but drink it right away?

Honey definitely works in ferments. No idea where you heard that it will kill the bacteria. People use honey in all kinds of fermentations, including pouring it over onions and garlic and fermenting that to boost immune. Alcohols and any kind of beer and even wines are ferments. Mead is a fermented honey wine. Heck, we didn't have sugar cane in Europe until relatively recent times and honey was used for sweetening things.

Hi Brianna -
Any CALORIC sweetener will work. I use organic white sugar.

Hello the bug recipe came out phenomenal!

However i'm having trouble after the fact...
1. I Would really like clarification and additional details on how to maintain the bug in the fridge. Also The specific ingredients I need weekly to maintain it.
2. What to replace into the bug when I strain some of the liquid out to use.
3. Do I need to remove ginger at any point or do I just keep adding ginger and sugar?
4. Can somebody please post the recipe on how to use the bug to make ginger beer? thank you.

The first time I made this is worked wonderfully, however the last two batches haven't turned 'bubbly', and the last one I used the 'soda' I made tasted moldy! What am I doing wrong?

The lemonade recipe using the ginger bug is wonderful ! As I have my own bees I can use their honey to feed the bugs too !
My ginger / turmeric bug is in the fridge now. Is that right I just feed once a week?
